Incremento de las olas de calor extremas | NextCity Labs

El cambio climático está acelerando la frecuencia y la intensidad de las olas de calor extremas.

Investigaciones recientes liderada por científicos del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC) y los resultados del trabajo se han publicado en la revista Nature npj Climate and Atmospheric Sciences, han demostrado que las olas de calor en los veranos de 2022 y 2023 en el Mediterráneo occidental, con anomalías de temperatura de +3,6°C y +2,9°C respectivamente, superaron las variaciones climáticas naturales de los últimos mil años. Estos fenómenos, que antes eran extremadamente raros, ahora podrían ocurrir con mayor frecuencia debido al calentamiento global.

Los factores claves de esta problemática es el rápido aumento de las temperaturas del océano Atlántico y del mar Mediterráneo ha sido crucial en la intensificación de estas olas de calor. Dado esto se han afectado gravemente a los ecosistemas, servicios hídricos, biodiversidad, turismo y agricultura.

Es necesario adoptar medidas significativas de adaptación y mitigación para enfrentar estos fenómenos extremos que ya están ocurriendo y serán más frecuentes en el futuro.
